One of the difficulties of using a laptop computer as your main computer is the touch pad. The small cramped pad can be difficult or awkward to use, especially if you do a lot of graphics work. If this describes you, you probably already have a corded USB mouse or wireless USB mouse. While this works the cord is not an elegant solution and most wireless USB receivers are big and ugly hanging off the side. However, the Logitech VX Nano mouse gives you a mouse with a slimline USB receiver profile.
The USB receiver is about the size of quarter, and when inserted in your laptop it sticks out about 3/8″. My suggestion is to pick the USB port you use least often and plug it in and forget it. After nearly 6 months of use I have never noticed its there.
The physical mouse is fairly comfortable and can be configured for left or right handed use with the included software. In addition to the normal right and left buttons the mouse has several other user configurable buttons. Ive tried a few times to get them configured properly but it never seems to “stick” after a reboot. The mouse also has scroll wheel which is comfortable to use.
One of the problems with earlier wireless mouse models was battery life, and I was somewhat leery of how long the two AAA batteries were going to last before needing to be replaced. I find I get about two months before I need to replace them. One bit of warning, if you are going to be on a plane use the power switch located on the back of the unit, as the constant shifting around in your laptop bag or briefcase will wear out the battery quicker. The mouse also has a really good range, as I discovered by accident when one of my children was moving the mouse which was about 20 feet away and one floor up. So if you wanted to use it as a poor mans presentation remote you could certainly get away with it.
The one downside to this mouse is it’s price. The unit currently retails for about $60 at Amazon.com.
If you are looking for a laptop mouse and hate dealing with cords or cumbersome USB receivers this is a model that should be on your shortlist.
