Use Jott, Save a Life

by Caitlin Cornelius on June 5, 2008

We’ve all seen it, a busy person trying to send an important text message while driving that causes us to swerve around them endangering ourselves and others. Well, thanks to the web-based service Jott such wonton recklessness is now entirely unnecessary.

Jott’s voice recognition system allows you to send text messages and email quickly and easily. Once you have registered with Jott, all you have to do is call 1-866-JOTT-123 from your cell phone and record a message or notes to be transcribed. The message can then be sent to yourself, an individual, a group or a web service as an email, text message, or both.

Jott Yourself

Ever have a good idea while out of the office on the go? Or hear about a book worth reading on NPR while you are stuck in traffic? Jott allows you to record those important thoughts before they slip away. There are three main features that allow you to do this.

  1. Sending a Jott to yourself simply places a transcribed version of the message in your email inbox.
  2. Another feature allows you to create and add to various lists, “work” or “around the house” for example, and access them when you login to Jott on the web.
  3. You may also choose to send yourself a reminder. When you record a message as a reminder, Jott asks you to set the specific date and time you wish to receive the message and reminds you in the form of a text message and email fifteen minutes before the specified time.

Essentially, Jott lists are for when you are thinking and Jott reminders are for when you are not.

Jott Contacts

Jott Individuals
Enter or import the email addresses and cell numbers of your essential contacts and use Jott to send text messages or emails from anywhere. Simply say the name of the contact when Jott asks you, “Who do you want to Jott?” Record your message and let Jott do the rest. Your text and/or email will be received in a matter minutes.
Jott Groups
Contacts may also be arranged into groups. For example, you could send updated supply information to your “sales staff” or alert your “drivers” group about impending severe weather. By taking the time to arrange Jott groups you can convey important information to a group of people in less time than it would take to call any one of them.

Tips:

  • You can email Jott a contact at jott@jott.com with “Add Contact” as the subject line.
  • You can also add a contact via text message to 40101 with “Add Contact” followed by the name, email and phone number.

Jott a Web Service

Jott is compatible with many of the most popular web services such as Twitter, Zillow, Google Calendar, Wordpress and Remember the Milk. After transcribing your voice recording, Jott can post it to a microblog like Twitter, place Amazon search results in your email inbox, or add items to your online shopping list.

Jott might not be for everyone, but in a world where cell phones are often more convenient than a pad and pencil, Jott can help you simplify your life and stop taxing your memory. Most importantly, Jott puts your eyes back on the road rather than a text message, potentially saving lives!

Rundown on Child Social Networking Sites

by Moo Girl on May 21, 2008

Your mother may have locked you out of the house and forced you into some exercise and group social interaction, but today’s kids grow up online. All those cardboard battle forts, princess tea parties, snowball fights, and even first experiences of raising the almighty goldfish, are happening virtually with the help of child social networks.

We’ve seen a wide variety of child social networking sites emerging over the past few years, and each one of them is aimed at giving kids a safe corner of the Web to call their own. They’re opening the doors to communication and allowing children to create brave new worlds where they can live, learn, strive, and play. But what benefits do child social networking sites really bring? What effects will they have on our children as they get older? What should parents be aware of?
